Should You Choose a Fixed or Vented Skylight?

Natural light has many benefits, from boosting your physical and mental health to enhancing your home’s energy efficiency. It improves mood and, because it reduces your reliance on artificial lighting, natural light also saves on energy costs. One surefire way to increase natural light levels in your home is by installing skylights. They are designed to provide natural light through the roof, especially in areas where windows don’t normally work.

When it comes to skylights, two types come to mind: fixed and vented. Read on as Howard Roofing & Home Improvements shares the benefits of each.

Fixed Skylights

A fixed skylight is the most basic type of skylight. While it can help you harness natural light for your interiors, it can’t be opened, much like typical office building windows or residential picture windows. Since it is sealed in the factory, a fixed skylight is less prone to hazards or leaks unless installed poorly.

The lack of moving parts also gives fixed skylights better energy performance, helping you save on utility costs. Thanks to their easy installation process and simple construction, they generally cost less than their vented counterparts. For this reason, it’s best to install a fixed skylight in areas where you want natural light but don’t need venting.

Vented Skylights

Vented skylights offer not only natural light but also ventilation. Many homeowners install this type of skylight for indoor spaces that require ventilation, such as in converted bedrooms, kitchens and any other rooms that may need efficient air circulation. In addition to temperature control, vented skylights can also contribute to a proper moisture balance.

If vented skylights are not installed within reach, however, manual operation can be difficult. Fortunately, many large manufacturers offer vented skylights that can be opened and closed using a remote control. Meanwhile, electric vented skylights are considered a “passive air conditioner.” Some can even automatically close when they sense raindrops.
