But like every other roofing material, the mineral granule layer slowly ‘sheds’ over time due to natural wear and tear. This means the protection slowly loses its effectiveness as your roof ages, it will shed a little granule loss from time to time.
Normally, granule loss can happen when your shingles were recently installed. It can stop after a certain amount of time, but if it still sheds after about a year and there’s a significant amount of granule loss, you might need to have it inspected by your shingle installer. Continued granule loss can compromise your roof’s protection against the weather and other natural elements. This can also happen more often toward the end of a roof’s lifespan, so if this is the case with your roof, then it’s time to get it fully replaced by a professional roofing contractor!
