Soffit and fascia are two important roofing components that are found at the roof’s edge. They come in various options and configurations, each with their own features and benefits. Sloped roofing systems have an overhang between the top of the exterior wall and the rafter tails. Most roofing styles are built with an exposed overhang, which require some type of material to protect them from being accessed by things like windblown debris and small animals. Soffits are the boards that cover this overhang. Also, the gaps between boards serve as intake vents for the attic ventilation system, complementing the exhaust vents at the ridge.
Fascia, on the other hand, are vertical boards that cover the rafter tails. Like soffits, they provide a finished look to the roofing edge. Fascia is also the part of the roof where gutter hangers are fastened, so they have to be strong enough to withstand drilling, as well as handle the weight of gutters at full capacity.
The right soffit material should allow ventilation, regardless of material. Whether you choose traditional wood boards or manufactured material, your soffit should have vents. Manufactured soffit can be made of steel, aluminum, vinyl or fiber cement and typically has interlocking components that allow even spacing between boards. Some products have hidden vents that allow close spacing without sacrificing ventilation. Soffit is exposed to the same conditions as the roof and siding, therefore a low-maintenance option would be ideal.
As we described above, fascia boards need to be able to handle the strain caused by gutters during heavy downpour, as well as high winds. In terms of material, wood is still the forerunner, though PVC and fiber cement options are available. Fascia is easily seen from the curb, so a low-maintenance option with molded-in or factory-applied colors would be ideal.
