Here’s the Difference Between Shingle Cracking and Splitting

Asphalt roofing shingles tend to crack and split. And while these terms are used interchangeably, they’re actually two different things. One of the most trusted roofers in the area, Howard Roofing & Home Improvements, explains the difference between shingle cracking and splitting.

What Shingle Cracking Means

Both cracking and splitting in shingles are characterized by a series of lines running across the surface of the materials. You’ll notice, however, that the lines in cracked shingles tend to be shallower. And while the cracks don’t cut deep into the shingle layer, they can still be a serious problem. That’s because cracked shingles can become susceptible to buckling and blow-offs. The issue itself is usually caused by old age or general wear and tear, but there are also cases where new shingles crack because they’re manufactured with too many fillers mixed in with the asphalt.

What Shingle Splitting Is About

When asphalt shingles split, the fissures across the material actually cut through the asphalt layer. This compromises the adhesive used to bond the material, causing the shingles to start pulling away from each other. Shingle splitting can occur due to extreme changes in weather and temperature. Because the split cuts deep into the material, it becomes easier for water and moisture to seep through shingles and leak through your roof.
