Beneath the asphalt shingles or metal panels lies the underlayment. Its primary purpose is to protect the roof deck if the exposed roof layer sustains punctures, dents, tears or any form of damage caused by the harsh elements.
During the installation process, the roofers fasten the underlayment onto the deck using fasteners with gaskets to ensure water can’t seep through. Despite its function, it is in no way a substitute for the actual roof covering. There are various types of underlayment materials used in sloped roofing systems. Asphalt-saturated felt is used traditionally in most roof installations before the advent of synthetic counterparts. It is a sheet of pulped fabric and recycled paper soaked in hot asphalt, giving it rigidity and resistance to impact.
Another type of underlayment material is called rubberized asphalt. It is mostly made of rubber, but it doesn’t have a significant amount of asphalt. Its elasticity, however, makes it an ideal material choice for homes situated in extreme climates.

It is a direct upgrade to the asphalt-saturated felt, boasting better water resistance. It is also cost-effective because the material is designed for full application on the entire roof.
